A Brief Synopsis Of Texas Land Surveying

From the early days of Spanish exploration to Mexican independence, to its brief time as an independent republic, to finally becoming annexed to the United States, the vast land known as Texas has had a rich and varied history when it comes to land surveying. While early attempts to survey the land for Spanish land grants were primitive at best, Texas surveys became even more complicated as this territory changed hands several times and borders needed constant clarification. As a unique holdover to its history, Texas adopted the Mexican vara as its standard unit of measurement in land surveying. In 1919, the Texas Legislature confirmed the official length of a vara as 33 1/3 inches, but a lack of uniformity prior to this date often resulted in inaccurate or inconsistent measurements. To this day, many Texas land records on file show land measurements in vara. While Texas land surveyors today utilize modern technologies that deliver far more accurate measurements, they often refer to older land records (including converting vara) when verifying or clarifying boundaries.
